5 minute stovetop popcorn

5 minute stovetop popcorn

Popcorn must be the most universal snack. Everyone loves popcorn!!! It is inexpensive, easy to make and healthy. But making popcorn at home on stovetop always did not work well. So, we tried microwave method. But then, you need to make popcorn by spoonful. Who wants to eat “just a cup” of popped corn?????
After a thorough research and many trials, this is what worked best for us. These blogs are my main references.

Before popping, get the flavourings and serving bowl ready. Melt butter in microwave and stir in the chilli powder. Set this aside. Pour coconut oil into a large pot (I use my 9 litre/quart soup pot) and add 2-3 corn kernels in it. These are the “test kernels”. Cover the pot with a lid and heat over medium high heat. Meanwhile, measure out ½ cup kernels and top with the salt. When the test kernels pop, add the salt topped kernels and give a quick stir. Cover the pot again and take off heat for 20-30 seconds. (“Count to 30”, says “Elise of happy cooking”). Put the pot back with lid over stovetop and heat over medium high. Active popping starts within 30 seconds and will go on for 4 to 5 minutes. When popping slows, i.e. when there is 3-4 seconds gap between popping, open the lid. Pour in the spiced, melted butter and stir well to combine. Remove to serving bowl.
